Link for the week: firehose jetpacks

One for the mechanics students this week… First, take a look at this video of the “Flyboard Family” (action starts just over 1 minute in; soundtrack may be best ignored). Then consider how/why one might be able to hover in mid-air, balancing on the jet of water from a fire-hose. Then have a look at this article in Physics Today for a brief quantitative analysis. (MM205 students: this is a nice illustration of force–impulse principles. MM305 students: consider how you might set this up as an integral momentum balance problem…)
