A few farewells

Some familiar faces will be absent from the Department when teaching starts again in September. In particular, two contributors to Degree of Freedom will be moving on to better things: Dr Mateja Prešern will be taking up a lectureship in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Glasgow; and Dr Andrew Wade will be taking up a senior lectureship in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University. If you haven’t read Mateja’s The Private Life of Numbers and Andrew’s The Full Monty then they’re both well worth a look!

Other departures this summer include Prof. Mark Ainsworth (moving to the Divison of Applied Mathematics, Brown University); Dr Özgür Ergül (returning to academic life in Turkey); Dr Calum MacDonald (moving to the School of Engineering and Built Environment, Glasgow Caledonian University); and Dr Steve Webb (moving to the Department of Molecular and Clinical Pharmacology, University of Liverpool).

There isn’t space here to describe the wide range of contributions all these people have made to the Department, but be assured that they haven’t gone unappreciated! We wish them all the best for the future…
